From 1942 to 1947, the war-time tractors were designated as model GMs, for G modernized. After 1947(the engine in the photo is a '48), they reverted back to Gs. They were commonly called Johnny Poppers or Poppin' Johnnies for their distinctive putt-putt exhaust sound.
